Almost everyone assumes nausea and vomiting are stomach-related. It’s true that these symptoms can originate from the stomach and intestinal area, when food poisoning or stomach flu are behind the symptoms. In some cases, stomach cancer can also cause nausea and vomiting.
Most cases of unexplained nausea and vomiting have everything to do with the central nervous system and nearby nerves. The vagus nerves are the most important nerves regarding anything to do with the stomach. If the vagus nerves are inflamed or irritated, whether up in or near the brain itself or down closer to the stomach, then nausea can occur. The vagus nerves can even go into spasm, resulting in vomiting. Often the reason for vagus nerve inflammation is a chronic, low-grade viral infection that’s releasing neurotoxins.
Toxic heavy metals inside the brain, close to the vagus nerves, can also cause nausea. Brand-new exposure to a heavy metal such as mercury can cause nausea and vomiting. It’s not uncommon for someone to get all their dental amalgam fillings removed and be overcome by these symptoms afterward due to the mercury exposure. Other varieties of mercury exposure from medical treatments can cause nausea and vomiting too.
Migraines and other headaches related to viral infections or toxic heavy metals can make the vagus nerves sensitive, leading to mystery stomach symptoms. Emotional trauma is another cause of nausea and vomiting. When the brain experiences an emotional blow or upset that makes us sick in the gut or heart, that’s all vagus nerve–related. Sinus infections from strep that’s been in the walls of the sinus cavities for years can also cause chronic nausea as a result of sinus nerves affecting facial nerves and other cranial nerves, eventually placing pressure on the vagus nerves.
There are certain situations where someone can have acid reflux due to a toxic liver and overload of strep or H. pylori in the intestinal tract, creating SIBO, and this can create nausea too.
